Custom Hand Crafted Old West Chaps
The above images are only a select sample of the many styles of chaps we can craft.
Any of our chaps styles can be customized to your specifications.
All chaps are unlined unless otherwise noted.

Chaps (from the Spanish chaparejos and/or chappareras) are descended from the Mexican vaqueros armas (skirt like pieces of bullhide tied to the saddle horn to hang down in front of the legs which developed into armitas, similar to modern chinks, which were smaller and belted around the waist) and the Indians leggings (two step in tubes of leather with no seat).

We make two styles of chaps with many variations available

** 1. Shotguns: The earliest style with step through legs (they are not form fitting with zippers like those used by modern equestrians, but are normally laced close, although they can be made with several straps and buckles or snaps and D-rings for closure).  Photographs show the original laced to close style being worn well into the early 1900's. These are often made with fringe and nickel conchos along the outside seam. Two styles of belt are available: the early style straight belt and the contoured belt which came into style somewhere around the 1890's. Our "standard" style is made with fringe and conchos on the leg seam, two thigh pockets, a nickel-plated belt buckle, and either style belt: the straight or the contoured. Lots of variations are available: without fringe, fringe on the belt and around the pockets, style of pockets including a built in holster, full stamped or carved belt, nickel or silver conchos and buckle, brass or nickel spots, stamped or carved strips down the legs with pockets and cuffs to match.

** 2. Batwings (not shown): main style is the early "Cheyenne" narrow flap style as pictured so often by Charlie Russell and Frederic Remington. These are similar to the shotguns but have 5-8 buckles and straps or snaps & rings attaching the full back leg to the front and a narrow rectangular flap down the outside of the leg rather than being fringed like the shotguns. These can be made with leg fringe and the same variations as available in the shotguns are also available on these. We also make the 1920's-1930's style super fancy batwing rodeo chaps - here the sky is the limit for decoration.

Wild Rose Trading Company's custom, hand crafted Old West Leather Goods and Frontier Trappings are based on the traditional designs and use the construction methods of the period from approximately 1740-1920. We generally do not make direct copies of originals - instead we prefer to make each piece employing our own original design elements to make each piece unique. Each one-of-a-kind item is made to your custom specifications based on period correct designs and construction techniques for an authentically made item with no two items ever being exactly alike. All of our work is historically based and of museum replica quality.

Wild Rose Trading Company's hand crafted leather goods, custom knives, and hawks are made to please the most discriminating collector. They also meet the strict standards required by the Old West/Frontiersman reenactor or the authentically inclined Cowboy Action Shooter®.
